Easter 2015 Newsletter

Welcome to our Easter newsletter. What a busy couple of months we have had. We celebrated World Book Day, Seachtain na Gaeilge, the sacrament of Reconciliation and we held a “Water Awareness Day”. We have applied for our 3rd Green Flag and will be inspected this week. Fingers crossed!

Our camogie team started their training and have already played 2 matches. The girls are making a huge effort and are training hard. Thanks to Ms Silke, Ms Quinlan and Barry Kinsella for training the team.

Chuaigh an cór go Féile an Aonaigh. Ghlac siad páirt i Slua Amhránaíochta agus bhuaigh siad – comhgairdeas! Our choir took part in an Irish singing competition in Nenagh and we are delighted to announce that they won for the second year in a row. Well done!

The classes have been working very hard and lots of marvellous activities have taken place. Have a read of what each class has been up to.

Junior Infants thoroughly enjoyed their first World Book Day in Mercy Primary School.  Fourth class read stories to us.  Mrs. Murray and her surprise Little Princess came to our class and read us a story too.  We completed activities based on the story and we were delighted with the new book that we got to bring home.  We also painted a giant Elmer that day.  We also got to play some maths games during the month of March as part of the Ready Set Go Maths programmes.  Many thanks to all the parents who came in to help.  Junior Infants performed so well during the Lá Gaeilge Ceolchoirm.  They sang songs and said poems and they wore their lovely shamrock crowns.  We were also busy doing art for Spring, Mother’s Day and Easter

Senior Infants  made patches on St. Brigid’s Day which when joined together make St. Brigid’s Cloak.  In Irish we made paper snowballs and pretended to play in the snow.  We practiced some new Irish

songs with Mrs. Kennedy which we really enjoyed.  In PE we made up our own ‘Snowflakes’ dance.  It was great fun.  In Alive O! Jack & Jill had an argument and we helped them become friends again.

During March on Work Book Day our guest reader was Ms. Mellsop. We also enjoyed Buddy Reading, and we dressed up as our favourite book characters.  During Seachtain na Gaeilge bhí na cailíní ag damhsa, ag canadh agus ag labhairt gaeilge.

We started our Write a Book  project.  We had a very busy ‘Water Day’.  We played water games – bubbles, rings in the water, and balance the cup.  We also did ‘Sea Adventure’ art collage.

1st Class  girls have been very generous and collected a lot of money for the children in Uganda.

We started subtraction for the first time ever and we are experts now!!

We had many trips to Birr Library as part of February/March Library Reading Challenge.  Many girls joined for first time.  We learned how to take out and return books.  Lá Gaeilge was filled with songs and poems agus  lots of comhrá sa rang.  We took part in Ceolcoirm agus simple table quiz.   We made lovely art during February and March.  A large St. Brigid’s cloak, St. Valentine and St. Patrick art and working on some lovely Easter art now.  Mrs. Kennedy has been busy teaching us tin whistle.  we are now able to play 5 full tunes having taken up tin whistle only 2 months ago.  For Work Book Day we dressed up as book characters;  we had buddy reading and we got a present of a lovely novel.  Mrs. Murray, our guest reader read us a great story of ‘The Cat in the Hat.

2nd Class  have had a busy month.  On March 3rd the girls received the sacrament of First Reconciliation.  It was a lovely celebration and well done to all the girls who sang very sweetly and behaved very well.  On March 5th we celebrated World Book Day.  The girls came to school dressed as their favourite book character.  Minnie Mouse read the class a funny story called ‘Mad Grandad and the Robot Garden’.  The 5th class girls did Buddy Reading with 2ndclass.  It was a fabulous day.  As part of the SESE programme we visited Dr. Catherine Barry’s dental surgery.  Here we found out about the work dentists do and we looked at the different tools dentists use.  Each child got a chance to sit on the big chair.  We were delighted with all the stickers we received from the dentist.  We are busy reading during DEAR time as we are taking part in the Library Challenge – Read Anything, Anytime, Anywhere.   The girls did lovely art activities for St. Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day.

3rd Class   have been learning all about Italy in geography and we are learning lots about the romans in history too!  Some of 3rd class have begun learning the guitar and they are getting on great.  We also entered a poetry/art competition based around W.B. Yeats.

4th Class  participated in Engineers Week at Birr Theatre.  We thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day reading our free book “Dork Diaries”  however following a class vote, it appears Roald Dahl is still our favourite author!  Local history:  we were given a guided tour of Birr Library and we did a follow up Table Quiz based on the history of the building in our classroom.  During Lá Gaeilge we had great fun.  We completed the reading initiative Read any time, any place, any where.

5th Class.  Rang a Cuig have had a very busy time of late.  We had great fun rehearsing for our Seachtain na Gaeilge performance in the halla, and we really enjoyed listening to the other classes too.  Water Day 2015 was a splash!  We really enjoyed all the activities and all the effort was work it.  Great work by Mrs. Fitzgerald and Ms. Enright.  We are working hard towards achieving our 3rd Green Flag.  Meanwhile we are busy with our projects on Europe.  It’s great to learn how our neighbours live.

6th Class   has a visit from local historian, Mrs. Margaret Hogan, who told us all about the Birr Workhouse.  We are really enjoying reading our novel War Horse at the moment.  We made wonderful flower arrangements for Mother’s Day and are now working hard preparing our Write-a-Book project.  We enjoyed a very interesting visit to Birr Reservoir recently. We were actively involved in Water Action Day  last Friday enjoyed a bit of a splash!!!
