                        May Newsletter

Welcome to our May newsletter. We have had another very busy month. It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of another school year.

May started off well with our lovely May Procession in the school yard. The children prayed and sang beautifully as we honoured Mary.

On the 9th of May, 6th class had their RSE workshop and the facilitator said they were a credit to the school and a pleasure to work with.

On Saturday 11th May, 2nd class made their First Holy Communion. They were beautiful. Well done to the girls and to Ms. De Chaumont for all the hard work that was put into the preparations.

On 14th May, some classes took part in testing for DEIS. This is carried out by the Educational Research Centre in Dublin.

On Friday 17th May, I had the pleasure of being invited to the Music Day in St. Brendan’s Boys’ School. It was a wonderful afternoon and the boys showed off all their talents. Well done to all involved.

Thursday 23rd May saw Ms. De Chaumont and 3 members of the Green Schools’ Committee travel to Athlone to accept our 2ndGreen Flag from An Taisce. We are all delighted and very proud to receive the flag and we will have a flag raising ceremony before the end of the year.

On Saturday 25th May, 6th class celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. The sun shone and the girls were great! Congratulations to you all.

On Monday 27th May, we welcomed the Midlands Parenting Partnership (Triple P Parenting Partnership). They gave an introductory talk to some of the parents of our incoming Junior Infants. It was very interesting.

Thursday 30th May was our Sports’ Day. We were very lucky with the weather as the sun shone. We had a really great day and all the girls were winners! Thanks to Ms. Murray and Ms. Ryan for organising the day.

Junior & Senior Infants:  All enjoyed a wonderful production of Oliver Twist in the P.E. Hall by M & M Theatrical Productions.  Learned the “Safe Cross Code” with Garda Padraig Connaughton.  Played games with parachute and made lovely pictures of animals peeping in our windows!   Visited the pool re  Water Safety.  Senior Infants were given a ‘grand tour’ of St. Brendan’s Church by Fr. David.  They also learned to skip in P.E.

1st Class  were very busy in May.  We painted our pottery heads and wall hangings in vibrant colours which we mixed ourselves.  In science we had fun observing how materials changed by heating and cooling.  We tested lots of ingredients in hot and cold water to see if they would dissolve. We had an enjoyable trip to Camcor Park on our Minibeast Hunt.  We  greatly enjoyed Oliver Twist in the Hall but swimming lessons and Sports Day were the highlights of the month.

2nd Class  visited the library many times during May.  They love reading their books and they are enjoying the ‘Reading Challenge’.  We had a fantastic day at our First Communion and we took part in the Corpus Christi Procession in the Prayer Garden.  We planted sunflower seeds.  We gave them plenty of water and sunlight and now they are growing very tall.  I wonder which sunflower will grow the tallest!?

3rd Class   went on a mini Beast Trail in Camcor Park – found loads of bugs and had great fun.  We have continued with Boot Camp and will be fighting fit for summer !  Rio 2016 here we come !!  We made beautiful mosaic butterflies and had many visits to the Library.

4th Class  We had great fun this month with swimming and camogie.  We made wonderful 3D shapes with pattern – tessellating art – figures that fit together like a jigsaw.  We also painted beautiful Degas Ballerinas which adorn our walls.  We participated in the ‘Sow and Grow’ programme and are keeping an eye on our plants growing in the window.

5th Class  studied the work of Giuseppe – who is renowned for painting imaginative fruit and faces,  and also Andy Warhol’s famous Pop Art.  We designed waterwheels and learned about the importance of using renewable energy.

6th Class    Worked very hard preparing for their confirmation.  Did loads of beautiful art work and worked in groups to produce their wonderful Class Magazines.
